Nissan has announced plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Kitakyushu. The plant will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are cost-effective as they do not use rare metals. Scheduled to begin production by FY2028, the factory will support Nissan’s goal to equip light EVs with advanced batteries.

The facility, requiring a ¥153.3 billion investment, will have an annual production capacity of 5 GWh. Construction is set to take place in the Hibikinada district, an area known for its concentration of energy-related industries.

This initiative aligns with Kitakyushu’s growing role as a center for EV production. Nearby, Toyota is building a next-generation battery plant to supply its luxury Lexus EV line. These developments reflect Kyushu’s increasing importance in the global shift toward decarbonization and EV adoption.
